Research Area 2: Increased understanding of the impacts of climate change
Our rapid-results, pen-side faecal egg counting kit (Micron Kit), with its associated mobile phone app and machine learning model could add value to a variety of potential research projects within the 3 research areas outlined in the call. As it is fully portable (battery-operated), cost-effective and easy to use it may be very useful in being employed in different geographical regions to better understand the effect of climate change on ruminant parasite prevalence. With our team of skilled software developers and our existing mobile phone app, there is also potential for generating geographical heat maps for certain parasite types or for developing a forecasting / alert system for infection risk based on climatic conditions throughout the grazing season. As there is focus on the development of novel and point of care diagnostic technology platforms and the collaboration between academia and industry, we are keen to work with interested parties on putting together a project proposal or joining a consortium for whom faecal egg counting can be of use to their proposed research.
