Research Area 1: Improved understanding of epidemic and emerging infectious animal diseases
At Ghent University we have developed the biocheck.ugent biosecurity scoring tool (https://www.biocheck.ugent.be/) which is a tool that allows to measure biosecurity at pig, poultry or cattle farms. This may be a very handy tool to include in any study looking at prevention of epidemic or endimic diseases.
the biocheck.ugent system is currently already used in over 13000 farms in over 50 countries in the world which provides us with a very large database on biosecurity / disease prevention practices in different farms and in different countries.
The faculty of veterinary medicine of Ghent University has been awarded the nr 1 position on the Shangai ranking on veterinary sciences for the last 3 years.
The veterinary epidemiology unit at Ghent University is highly active in field research with regard to biosecurity, reduction of antimicrobial use and reduction of antimicrobial resistance.
