Research Area 1: Improved understanding of epidemic and emerging infectious animal diseases
My main research interest is based around glycoimmunology, glycosylation and host-pathogen interactions. We have built high throughput platforms to identify and measure interactions with immune receptors, and structural characterisation of molecular and cellular glycosylation and carbohydrate-binding (lectin function). We also utilise validation methods of HPLC, ELISA, cell-based assays, etc. and carbohydrate structural characterisation validation using HPLC.

My research team is based within the Bioscience building and the Discipline of Microbiology at NUI Galway. The Bioscience building is a dedicated research building which houses several core facilities and the national SFI-funded Research Centre, CÚRAM, focused on designing the next generation of ‘smart’ medical devices.
