Research Area 1: Improved understanding of epidemic and emerging infectious animal diseases
Research in Vibrio, mainly in V. vulnificus and V. harveyi as pathogens for aquatic animal species of interest in aquaculture with special emphasis in V. vulnificus as it is a zoonotic agent able to infect humans by contact with diseased animals.
1) pathogen biology inside and outside the animal/human hosts; wildlife reservoirs
2) host-pathogen interaction: virulence factors and immune response; early immunological markers.
3) epidemiology of the disease, including the understanding of the effect of global warming. Main tool: phylogenomic plus environmental data
BIOTECMED is a Higher Institute of Cooperative Research and ERI (Structure of Interdisciplinary Research) of the University of Valencia in the field of Molecular Biology applied to Biotechnology and Biomedicine with two main objectives: (i) Scientific excellence: strengthen and promote research in basic and applied molecular biology and (ii) Transferability: boost technology transfer articulating interactions with companies, on topics of biotechnology and biomedicine.
The University of Valencia has a series ofexcellent research facilities included in the Central Service for Experimental Research. For this ERANET call, the follopwing are of the especial interest: Genome and transcriptome sequencing unit. Bioinformatic unit. Proteomic services including MALDITOFF etc. and more importantly, The Experimental Pilot Plant Aquaria that offer infrastructure designed to develop research projects in the area of microbiology, ecology, toxicology and pharmacology. The plant has 9 independent recirculating aquaculture systems, allowing control of water parameters and the simultaneous maintenance of different conditions depending on need (temperature, salinity, pH, toxicants, oxygen levels, etc.).There is also an isolated room containing temperature- and photoperiod-controlled aquaria with individualized filtration suitable for pathogen challenges and a microbiology lab of biosafety level 2 with facilities for essential molecular biology experiments.
